This season, clothes are meant to be touched. Shearling, pile, fringe, faux fur and fuzzy bags were all over the Autumn/Winter 2026 runways, and trend reports describe the season as one of abundance rather than restraint. If minimalism has felt a little flat lately, texture is the simplest way to make an outfit feel new.
What the runways showed
Coveteur named "tactile texture" a focal point of the season. It highlighted Louise Trotter's Bottega Veneta collection, which it said overflowed with fur, pile, shearling and fringe, and Louis Vuitton, where shearling and fur took over the runway. In a separate "statement fur" section, the same report notes that faux fur has returned to the runway after a vintage fur revival, with belted coats at Gucci, multicoloured versions at Chanel, fur trousers at Schiaparelli and heirloom-looking coats at Valentino.
Accessories followed. Harper's Bazaar UK lists "textured totes" as a key trend, describing furry bags from Gabriela Hearst to Simone Rocha, a tweedy, flower-covered tote at Dior and a feathery bag at Erdem. British Vogue mentioned teddy bear textures at Loewe, and Vogue's Copenhagen Fashion Week report highlighted shearling toppers, scarf coats and puffer jackets trimmed with lace or fur.
Why texture matters now
Harper's Bazaar UK opens its season overview by saying the mood for autumn is "one of abundance", focused on self-expression and personality rather than a single algorithm-approved look. Texture is the most practical way to join that mood. A fuzzy bag or a shearling collar adds interest even to a plain jeans-and-knit outfit, without requiring any bold colour or print.
How to wear it
- One textured hero piece: a shearling or faux-fur jacket, worn with simple trousers and a knit, is enough.
- The fuzzy bag: the lowest-commitment version of the trend. It works with a classic coat and makes the outfit feel current.
- Texture on texture: for a richer look, mix a chunky knit, a bouclé or tweed skirt and suede boots in tones of one colour.
- Trim, not total: a coat or puffer with a shearling or faux-fur collar gives the effect with less bulk.
- Fringe: a fringed scarf, bag or skirt adds movement and nods to the Bottega Veneta mood.
A note on fur
The runways showed both faux fur and a revival of vintage fur. If you prefer to avoid animal fur, faux fur, shearling-look fleece and high-pile knits create the same effect. Buying vintage or secondhand is another option many people choose, because it reuses what already exists. Whatever you pick, check the label so you know what you are buying.
Care tips
Textured pieces last longer with a little care. Brush pile and faux fur gently, let them air out instead of washing often, and store them with space around them so the fibres don't flatten. Always follow the care label.
